Cannabis Tourism:

Things you need to know before experiencing cannabis in Santa Ana

Cannabis has been legal in California since 2018. No matter where you are in California, it’s important to understand what is and isn’t allowed so you are able to relax and fully enjoy the experience.

Santa Ana is the first Orange County city to permit recreational marijuana sales. The city continues to lead the way in allowing the safe cultivation, sale, and consumption of legal cannabis. Entrepreneurs who want to grow cannabis, make things with the plant, and package, distribute, or sell products to retail customers are free to do so in Santa Ana.

Travel Santa Ana is your trusted guide to enjoying cannabis experiences as part of your visit. Remember that cannabis is a tool for wellness, and if consumed mindfully, can enhance travel experiences in a special way.

Know Before You Go

The Basics

  • If you are 21 and older, you can purchase and carry up to one ounce of dried cannabis flower and up to eight grams of cannabis concentrate-infused products like gummies, chocolate, or beverages.

  • You are not allowed to give or sell cannabis to anyone under 21 years of age.

  • You can consume cannabis on private property, but property owners may not allow smoking or vaping cannabis on their properties.

  • Consuming cannabis in public places is not allowed. Do not consume or possess cannabis on federal lands including national parks.

  • When consuming THC-rich edibles or beverages, it may take 2+ hours for the effects to set in.  Be patient and wait to feel the full effects before consuming more.

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Know the basics of what is and is not allowed, be safe.

  • Check with individual hotels and lodging accommodations for their policies.

  • Always ‘Go Low and Go Slow’ when consuming THC-rich cannabis products - always!

  • Beware of mixing cannabis and alcohol. If you do decide to mix, consume cannabis first and wait for the effects to fully set in prior to drinking alcohol of any kind.

  • Don’t smoke or vape in places where smoking and vaping are not permitted.

Tips & Tricks

  • Feel how cannabis amplifies the present moment. Delight in the little moments and remember that it is not uncommon to lose track of time and occasionally lose track of the conversation. With cannabis, that sometimes happens. It’s part of the fun!

  • Let the laughter roll. Certain kinds of cannabis in certain moments have a way of tapping into the lighter side of life. Smile, belly laugh, and enjoy. Laughter is the best medicine after all.

  • Embrace creativity. Cannabis often shifts one’s perspective and provokes thought. It boosts interpretation and highlights the little things, the subtle nuances of an environment. Enjoy this fun shift in perspective.

  • Carry a bottle of water with you at all times to quench your thirst as needed. Stay hydrated.

  • Chewing gum is an easy way to add some flavor and texture to your experience. Carry gum,  breath mints, or a snack for a treat, when desired.

Traveling

  • It’s illegal to drive or bike under the influence of cannabis.

  • It’s illegal to have an open container of cannabis in a vehicle while driving or riding in the passenger seat. If you have cannabis in a vehicle, it must be in a sealed container. Otherwise, it must be stored in the trunk of the vehicle while in transit.

  • Rideshare services, like Uber and Lyft, operate throughout the city and greater region if you are under the influence of cannabis and need a ride.

  • Do not carry cannabis across state lines. Even if you are flying within California, TSA agents may confiscate cannabis given they are a federal agency and cannabis is not legal under federal laws.

PLEASE CONSUME RESPONSIBLY. USE A DESIGNATED DRIVER OR RIDESHARE.
