As a mom of a child with sensory needs, I know that holiday activities can be a little daunting. Between busy crowds, bright lights, and loud sounds, many holiday events can feel overwhelming for my child. However, Santa Ana offers some truly autism-friendly holiday activities that make this season feel a little more magical—and manageable. Here are a few of our favorite sensory-friendly experiences that I think other parents will find helpful, too.

1. Sensory-Friendly Santa Visits at MainPlace Mall

The sensory-friendly Santa visits at MainPlace Mall have been a game-changer for us. This special time with Santa features a quieter environment, dimmed lights, and no pressure to rush or deal with large crowds. My child felt at ease, and we enjoyed this holiday tradition without stress.

Our Experience:
Scheduling in advance helped us prepare, and arriving a little early gave my child time to settle in and get comfortable.

2. Hands-On, Low-Stimulation Activities at Bowers Museum

The Bowers Museum hosts lovely holiday-themed, sensory-friendly workshops. My child loved creating ornaments and decorations at their own pace in a relaxed and supportive environment. For a festive, sensory-friendly activity, check out the International Winter Holiday Family Festival.

This free event is part of the museum’s regular Family Festivals and features activities like face painting, live performances, and art-making stations in the spacious Key Courtyard. The open space makes it easier for kids with sensory needs to participate without too much stimulation. Plus, the event includes scheduled breaks, which are helpful for children who need extra time to adjust.

Tips for a Great Experience:
If you’re visiting the Bowers Museum with a child with sensory needs, consider going on weekday mornings when it tends to be quieter. Many exhibits are interactive and hands-on, so engage with the ones your child is drawn to and let them set the pace. Bringing a small sensory kit with comfort items like headphones or fidget toys can make the experience smoother and more enjoyable.

3. Santa Ana Family Rave

Get ready to dance, groove, and party with your entire family at the Santa Ana Family Rave hosted at the Yost Theater. Big Fish Little Fish brings the beats for an afternoon of fun and excitement for everyone! This multi-sensory event welcomes all ages, but at least one child must be present per group to enter.

Highlights:

  • Multi-sensory dance floor filled with confetti, balloons, and a parachute dance finale
  • Crafting area with multiple activities
  • Licensed bar (cash and card)
  • Optional fancy dress—break out your ugly sweaters, reindeer antlers, and Santa hats

4. Quiet Holiday Mornings at Discovery Cube Orange County

The Discovery Cube offers sensory-friendly mornings during the holiday season, making it one of our favorite places to visit. The hands-on, holiday-themed exhibits allow children to explore without loud sounds or large crowds.

Key Events:

  • Winter Lights: A Journey Home
Runs now through December 23, 2024, and transforms the Cube into a winter wonderland with snowfall effects, singing snowmen, and a sensory-friendly show.
  • The Science of Gingerbread
Displays intricate gingerbread creations now until January 5, 2025. This interactive exhibit includes a gingerbread competition with categories like “Winter Wonderland” and “It’s a Small World.”

Tips for a Smoother Experience:
Arrive early on weekdays to avoid crowds. For the sensory-friendly Winter Lights show, bring comfort items like noise-canceling headphones. Quiet areas within the Cube are perfect for taking breaks if needed.

5. Sensory-Friendly Holiday Movie Showings at The Frida Cinema

The Frida Cinema in Santa Ana hosts monthly sensory-friendly movie screenings, making it easier for families to enjoy festive films. These screenings feature dimmed lights and lowered sound levels; children can move around or make noise during the film.

How We Made It Cozy:
Having my child’s favorite comfort items, like a cozy blanket or sensory toy, helped make the experience more relaxed and enjoyable. The familiar snacks and treats available at the venue added an extra layer of comfort to our outing.
